The Cruel Prince (The Folk of Air #1) by Holly Black | Review

The Cruel Prince CoverOf course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever. And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

quotation-marks-leftWhat could I become if I stopped worrying about death, about pain, about anything? If I stopped trying to belong?

OMG you guys! This book was worth the wait. This book deserved every drop of hype that was surrounding its release. I can say that I’m glad to have made this my first read of 2018. Every other book I read is going to have to try hard to top my feelings for this book.

The writing was amazing. Every word Holly Black put into the setting was glorious and was so easy to get swept away in. I loved the world building and having my imagination come to life with her fluid writing.

There was betrayal, secrets, and action all rolled into one. I don’t want to dive into anything and spoil it. JUST READ THIS DAMN BOOK!

The star of this book was Jude. She is a heroine I love to read about. She was strong, determined and selfless. She refused to bow down to anyone. She wanted a place in this world even if she had to make it herself. She was nobody’s puppet or just a dumb mortal.

quotation-marks-leftI am going to keep on defying you. I am going to shame you with my defiance. You remind me that I am a mere mortal and you are a prince of Faerie. Well, let me remind you that means you have much to lose and I have nothing. You may win in the end, you may ensorcell me and hurt me and humiliate me, but I will make sure you lose everything I can take from you on the way down. I promise you this is the least of what I can do.

Things got super complicated between Jude and her sisters and fairy family. Shit went down! I can’t wait to see how those things progress in the next book.

It even had a little bit of romance here (not as much as I’m used to haha) but we still get some swoon worthy moments from time to time.

quotation-marks-leftHe leans in and closes his eyes. “Most of all, I hate you because I think of you. Often. It’s disgusting, and I can’t stop.”

All in all, I’m going to be in a book hangover for a hot minute thanks to The Cruel Prince. I need the sequel to this book like now! Waiting for it is going to be utter torture.

  1. I’ve been wondering if I should try this one! I’m usually ONLY into contemporaries but this sounds good and everyone has been raving about it. Might have to give it a try!
