Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda
by Becky Albertalli
My Rating: ❤❤❤
Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.
With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.
“There shouldn’t even be a default.”
Does it make me terrible that I rated this one a 3? This is a like Goodreads cult classic so nobody was more shocked than me by this rating. I just didn’t love it. I picked up a copy after I heard about the Love, Simon movie. Now just because I didn’t fall in love with the book doesn’t mean that I’m not going to see the movie. I’ve heard nothing but great things about and I think that Nick Robinson is adorable!
Moving on to my review. So like I said earlier, I didn’t love it like I planned to. It was a bit boring to me for about half the book. It was mainly about Simon emailing Blue, and his day to day life like the play at school. For some reason, I was just expecting more. Something more monumental I guess.
Also, I wanted to know more about his friends. They came off as very one dimensional. I really didn’t get to know anything about them. I really had a problem with how we hardly ever got to read about Leah at all. Which sucks because the parts that we did read, she came off very bitchy and annoying. I’m not sure if I’m going to read her book, but I do hope that in Leah on the Offbeat they make up for us not really getting a good picture of her.
The redeeming thing for me was the romance! I really enjoyed the romance between Simon and Blue. It was adorable and made me smile! I loved the banter in their emails and how they really got to know each other. I predicted who Blue was but it didn’t take away from when the moment when he was revealed. You felt the sparks and it really felt like a first relationship with the shyness and first experiences that you have.
“The way I feel about him is like a heartbeat — soft and persistent, underlying everything.”
Alli in all, it was a good read. It was cute and heartfelt. Even though I didn’t love it, it made me smile and I’m glad I read it.

I see I waited too late to go to the theaters to see the movie because it’s coming out on dvd soon 😳
But I was feeling left out as well so I picked it up. It was cute just not something I loved.

Great honest review, Kayla! I gave this book a 3.5 stars because I found the first half boring but I really enjoyed the second half.
