My Plain Jane
My Lady Janies #2

You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)
Or does she?
Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.
Unfortunately for me, My Plain Jane wasn’t as good as My Lady Jane. Don’t come for me!! This is just my opinion. I was so hyped for the next release in the My Lady Janies series and when I got my hands on it I was so excited! It was just missing so much of the essence of the first one.
This was a retelling of Jane Eyre, and let me get this out now. The classic Jane Eyre was not a favorite of mine. So why did I read it? Well if anybody could get me to like a retelling of Jane Eyre, it would be these ladies. This was part retelling + Ghostbusters + murder mystery.
My really big letdown was that the humor from My Lady Jane was missing in this book. There still some funny moments but nothing that made me laugh as loud as before. This had a more serious feel to it and that’s okay! It’s just not what I was looking for.
The next one in the series will be about Calamity Jane and I’m excited about it. I hope they can bring back the magic in that one. And I’m really excited to see how they retell her story!
If you were looking forward to reading this, please don’t let my review sway you not to. I just wanted to tell you what didn’t work for me. So many people loved this so still give it a try when it comes out on June 26th!
Bummer this was a let down! Hopefully your next read will be better 💕

If you liked Jane Eyre then you might like this one. I read a lot of good reviews for this one, so I think I’m just the odd man out.

Wonderful and honest review, Kayla. I love Jane Eyre so I may end up reading this at some point… while this is a series, does this build off the first book at all? Or is it more of a standalone within a larger structure?

Each book in the series will about a different Jane. The next one will be about Calamity Jane.

That’s cool! So I take it you don’t need to read the previous books in the series? Or does it build on the previous ones at all? I am trying to figure out if I can just read #2 LOL

Great honest review! I’m sorry the second book didn’t meet your expectations. Recently, I’ve been a hearing a lot of mixed reviews about it.

I’m hoping I love the next one more!
I should have known I would love it since I really didn’t like the original Jane Eyre.
