Books That I have Recently DNF’d

So I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump for the past week. I know, I know. It’s a reader’s worst nightmare. So since I don’t have any reviews to post, I thought I would share some books that just didn’t match well with me. Let’s get into it!

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

15745753Two misfits.
One extraordinary love.
Eleanor… Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough…Eleanor.Park… He knows she’ll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There’s a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises…Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.

I really wanted to like this one. Especially since it has such great reviews on Goodreads. But nope, just nope. I called it a DNF in chapter 7.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I’m not wasn’t even going to try to continue reading this. So far this is offensive AF and I just can’t read this.

“Jungle fever is a thing,” Cal said.
“For black people. If you like black people. And it’s not a compliment, I don’t think.”
“Your people come from the jungle,” Call said, pointing at Park.

“Park’s eyes got wide. Well, sort of wide.
Sometimes she wondered if the shape of his eyes affected how he saw things.”

Life is too short for me to read books that offend me just because they are popular.

Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland

36593240My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards.

We met at a wedding—him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s. Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction.

I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter. Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us. His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off. But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me.

We ended up back in my hotel room. The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number.

I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby. Our attraction hadn’t dulled one bit. After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time. So I left him with my mother’s—she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage—and flew back home.

I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner. The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city. He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems.

Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose?

Nothing, I thought.
It’s just sex, not love.
But you know what they say about the best laid plans…

DNF @38%

I really tried! I really wanted to like this, but I just couldn’t. I couldn’t stand Hunter!! He was this biggest playboy I have read about in a while! I didn’t even want to keep reading because of his crude remarks. Seriously, he overheard a conversation between Natalia and her friend about having a one-night stand and of course he volunteers himself for the part. After she turns him down, he purses her like no other, made crude remarks and kept offering her sex.

Also, I did not enjoy the flashbacks of him and his ex. What was the point of this? We are supposed to reading about him and Natalia, not how he fell in love with his ex. I had to stop!

Darker by E.L. James

32024902E L James revisits the world of Fifty Shades with a deeper and darker take on the love story that has enthralled millions of readers around the globe.

Their scorching, sensual affair ended in heartbreak and recrimination, but Christian Grey cannot get Anastasia Steele out of his mind, or his blood. Determined to win her back, he tries to suppress his darkest desires and his need for complete control, and to love Ana on her own terms.

But the horrors of his childhood still haunt him, and Ana’s scheming boss, Jack Hyde, clearly wants her for himself. Can Christian’s confidant and therapist, Dr. Flynn, help him face down his demons? Or will the possessiveness of Elena, his seducer, and the deranged devotion of Leila, his former submissive, drag Christian down into the past?

And if Christian does win Ana back, can a man so dark and damaged ever hope to keep her?

DNF at 43%

Yes, I know. The Fifty Shades of Grey series is a very controversial series. However, I enjoyed it with its flawed characters and VERY flawed writing. I even enjoyed the first in Christians POV, but THIS?

Who the hell is this person and where is the real Christan Grey? He came off sweet and like a great guy. If you read the book then you know he was fucked up in the damn head! I might come back to this at a later time since I spend my money on it.

So there are some books that I have recently DNF’d. Do we have in common?
What are some books that you recently DNF’d?

Thanks for reading!❤

  1. I’ve had Eleanor and Park on my shelf for years and have debated letting it go. Quite a few POC find this book offensive, while most non-POC seem to love it. I didn’t even know that line was in it. I feel like Rainbow Rowell can do no wrong to some fans, so I had to really dig to learn about the problematic content.

    1. I was quite shocked to read some of the lines in that book. With so much praise for it, I don’t understand! I haven’t read anything by her and I don’t think I will after reading this one.

  2. I love this post omg. I DNF’ed Eleanor and Park years ago. Definitely was a bad read. This was before I even knew about problematic content. I recently DNF’ed A Study of Charlotte (I think that’s the title? I was so bored!). I just couldn’t get into the writing style 😅

    1. I’m shocked by how many people love Eleanor and Park! The reviews on Goodreads made me feel like I was reading the wrong book.
Also, I heard a lot of mixed review on A Study of Charlotte. I had been going back and forth about reading it.

  3. A few years ago, I heard about the problematic content in Eleanor and Park, so I never read it, but I had never seen especific lines from the book that showed how problematic it was, after reading this post I have no doubt that I made the right call not reading that book. Those lines are so offensive! 😒

  4. Interesting. I read E and P aggggggeeesss ago and didn’t really pick up on anything problematic but I was very young and naive and probably missed a lot of even quite obvious things like the bit you quoted. I’m quite tempted to re-read it at some point. Thanks for this thought-provoking post.

  5. I had heard of E&P and heard only good things about it. I’m so glad to read your views on it. As a white person committed to collecting other white people when they are being racist or just stupid, I feel it is my responsibility to let others know about problematic material like this; usually that means reading it so I know what I am talking about. You’ve def inspired me to look into this and see what white people like so much about it. lol Thanks for sharing!

  6. I’m one of those readers who DNF books quite a bit. I think life is too short to focus on reading books that give you hives, you know.

This year, I’ve only DNF’d 5 books which is very surprising. The one book that I wrote a DNF review for is the hyped The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. This book is supposed to be a slow burn romance but slow burn does NOT mean there are no interactions and chemistry between the h/H right? In fact, I was rooting for the roommate and the heroine to hook up because they had more conversations together! Gaaaahh

I haven’t read the FSoG series and I never will but I do have a friend who loves the series. She did say she doesn’t want to read Christian’s POV, though.
