A mermaid, a prince, a true loveās kiss.
But before that young sirenās tale, there were three friends.
One feared, one royal, and one already dead.
~~~~~~~~~~
Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch.A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasnāt so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyesāand heartsāof two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.But her new friend has secrets of her own. She canāt stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friendās humanity, along with her princeās heartāharnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.The rise of Hans Christian Andersenās iconic villainess is a heart-wrenching story of friendship, betrayal, and a girl pushed beyond her limitsāto become a monster.
I received an ARC via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
“The sea is a fickle witch. She is likely to bestow a kiss as to steal the breath from your lips.”
I’ll say it, I just wasn’t in love with it. This is a book that I honestly thought I was going to love as soon as I read it. I mean, that cover alone is enough to make me fall in love. The synopsis and it being a sort of a little mermaid retelling made me almost sell my right arm to get this. Sadly, it just wasn’t what I expected it to be.
Now the story is good,Ā the characters could have been a bit more shelled out,Ā but it was an entertaining story to say the least. I didn’t really connect to any of the characters at all. So with that and the slow moving plot, it tookĀ a bit to get into this story. The last 100 pages or so isĀ when the story really picks and held my attention.Ā
Most of the novel focuses on Evelyn’s struggle with a town that hates her and her friendship with prince Nik. I was just wanting something more than that. Also, the romance here so damn confusing. I won’t speak too much about it, but I’m still scratching my head.Ā
Now everything wasn’t a miss for me. I loved the world building and the magic! I loved reading about Evie coming into her magic and learning her heritage. Also, we have ball gowns and dancing and I’m a sucker for that!Ā
All in all, this cover is what dreams are made of but I couldn’t love it like I wanted to.Ā
Lovely review! ⤠I'm sorry you were a bit disappointed by this one – I only read positive reviews so far, but it's nice to see a different opinion for a change! š It's always a bit frustrating when you can't connect to the characters at all, I get that
I hope your next read will be better! š Happy reading! š
I hate when I feel like the odd one out for not loving a book. What are you currently reading?
I completely understand – but the world would be boring if we all read the same books, right? š
I am currently reading Save The Date, by Morgan Matson and loving it! š
I’ve had my eye on that one. I actually picked up some of her books on Amazon a few weeks back because I heard good things about her writing.
Great review, Kayla! I recently kicked this out from my TBR shelf after hearing a lot of mixed reviews about it. I also heard there’s a insta-love in this book and it’s one of my major book turn-off’s. So, this book is definitely not for me. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it as much as you hoped!
I wanted to love it to but didn’t. I actually ended up DNFing it at about 65%. It was the first ARC I’ve stopped reading. It was just moving too slow. Glad I’m not the only one who didn’t love it.
