DNF Review // Damsel by Elana K. Arnold

36260155The rite has existed for as long as anyone can remember: when the prince-who-will-be-king comes of age, he must venture out into the gray lands, slay a fierce dragon, and rescue a damsel to be his bride. This is the way things have always been.

When Ama wakes in the arms of Prince Emory, however, she knows none of this. She has no memory of what came before she was captured by the dragon, or what horrors she has faced in its lair. She knows only this handsome prince, the story he tells of her rescue, and her destiny to sit on the throne beside him. Ama comes with Emory back to the kingdom of Harding, hailed as the new princess, welcomed to the court.

However, as soon as her first night falls, she begins to realize that not all is as it seems, that there is more to the legends of the dragons and the damsels than anyone knows–and that the greatest threats to her life may not be behind her, but here, in front of her.

My Thoughts

I couldn’t finish this one guys. This was was a book where I should have read the reviews before requesting a copy. I saw a beautiful cover and thought the synopsis was promising. Ya’ll, I couldn’t have been more wrong!

This book needs to come with a freakin’ trigger label attached to it.
TRIGGERS:
→Self Harm
→Rape, Attempted Rape
→Beastiality
→Abuse

And the list literally goes on! I had to put the book down and step away. I honestly don’t understand how this is being categorized as Young Adult. There is no way I would want my kids to read this. Heck, I’m 27 and I can’t even stomach this book.

Bottom line, don’t be fooled by the beautiful cover and synopsis. Read some reviews and see if this is a good fit for you.

  1. The cover is really really beautiful! I think I’ll add this to my TBR anyway it sounds pretty interesting and I love to see why other people may DNF a book. Good review though sorry it wasn’t for you. However, it’s good that you’re helping to spread that it can be triggering, because the synopsis doesn’t even hint that it would be!

  2. I might add this to my TBR, because I tend to ”like” (this really isn’t the right word) YA with serious/adult themes. I do think it’s great that you put the word out there for the trigger warnings! I like knowing those beforehand as well.

  3. This was on my TBR too! I couldn’t wait to get to it, the plot sounded like something I would love. But then I went to check the reviews (just to be on the safe side I always check reviews before going in as I have been caught off guard before) and I was shocked by went I read!

I seriously think they should change the target audience or at least put a trigger warning on my front! That way people won’t be triggered and it can reach the right audience.

I think it’s great that you are warning people and explained why you DNF 🙂

  4. Sorry this one didn’t work for you! I’m actually really excited for this one, but I was told before I requested it that it was more NA than YA and that it dealt with some really dark stuff, so I could see why it wouldn’t work out as well if you hadn’t been warned beforehand.
