Life and a dismal last name are the only two things Beyah Grim’s parents ever gave her. After carving her path all on her own, Beyah is well on her way to bigger and better things, thanks to no one but herself.

With only two short months separating her from the future she’s built and the past she desperately wants to leave behind, an unexpected death leaves Beyah with no place to go during the interim. Forced to reach out to her last resort, Beyah has to spend the remainder of her summer on a peninsula in Texas with a father she barely knows. Beyah’s plan is to keep her head down and let the summer slip by seamlessly, but her new neighbor Samson throws a wrench in that plan.

Samson and Beyah have nothing in common on the surface.

She comes from a life of poverty and neglect; he comes from a family of wealth and privilege. But one thing they do have in common is that they’re both drawn to sad things. Which means they’re drawn to each other. With an almost immediate connection too intense for them to continue denying, Beyah and Samson agree to stay in the shallow end of a summer fling. What Beyah doesn’t realize is that a rip current is coming, and it’s about to drag her heart out to sea.
MY feelingsI haven’t read a CoHo book in such a long time so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I can see why so many people enjoy this. To some, this will be hard hitting because it touches on so many things. To me, it’s really just a story about two broken people who found each other. I kept going back and forth about my rating because it’s not a story that is going to stay with me and I had a constant disconnect while reading.

I never connected to Beyah or Samson. I also didn’t understand Beyah’s connection to Samson. How can you become devotedly attached to someone that you don’t really know? While she knew some things about him, she really didn’t once it came down to it. I get that she saw pieces of herself in him, but I just don’t understand how that amounted to the amount of loyalty she gave.

Besides my disconnect while reading this, nothing really happens here. The majority of this book takes place over the summer and we were just reading about their everyday lives. I was expecting more.

I don’t know if I’m just heartless or it just wasn’t a story for me. Let’s just go with the latter. I’m clearly the minority here if the reviews are anything to go on. So if you’re a fan of this author’s previous books or want an emotional read, then pick this one up.

  1. I’ve only read one book by her and didn’t like it so I don’t think I would pick up another. Sorry this one didn’t work for you!

  2. Sorry you didn’t like this one more. I get what you’re saying. Although, I do think she was young enough to pine for someone she didn’t really know all that well. I guess she was in love with the idea of him. Which makes sense to me in ways thinking about my shorter relationships when I was younger, but at the same time she really didn’t know the real him so maybe she should have been madder. You made me think with this review!

  3. Ouch. That’s really unfortunate. Thank you for your honesty!
I just got ‘It Ends With Us’ recently, I hope it’s not as disappointing.
